Classy on Sunday // Grey on Gray

Classy on Sunday // Grey on Gray

Do any of you ever get confused with how to spell grey? Evidently "gray" spelled with an "a" is the American adaptation, while "grey" is the... normal spelling? I don't know why, but grey has always seemed more refined and polished than gray (oh, and don't try reading this paragraph out loud... for obvious reasons ;). So now that we have the spelling of grey as grey spelled with an "e" being much more elegant than gray (geez, but I'm starting to sound like Anne of Green Gables), we can now get down to business with my very grey outfit (ok, I'll stop now :D)...

Grey (here we go again...) seems to have crept into every corner of my A/W wardrobe, and boy, but am I glad of it! That in-between color has had a soft spot in my style sense as of late, so this outfit is an obvious favorite of mine. But not only because of the monotone aspect, but also because I have a wonderful pop of Barbie pink incorporated via my wonderful lipstick :) I love small pops of random color in a monotone outfit... It just about makes my day :)

Exciting things are happening at the BFS Studio (which finally has it's own exclusive room in our house! Yay!), that I can't yet disclose, yet can't wait to reveal to you all in the near future! One way you could help us out in one of these adventures is to start following us with Bloglovin' as opposed to Google Friends Connect. Though we will still have that widget live, we would so much rather have you all following us on the Bloglovin' following platform! We girls have benefitted so much switching over to that platform, and follow new blogs almost exclusively through them rather than GFC. So if you could, do hop on over and sign up (if you haven't already) and follow us! It would mean so much! :)

Oh, and be sure to check out our A Pocket of Whimsy interview and giveaway!

What is your favorite way to spell grey?

  1. Haha, Charlotte. It's grey. Not gray. Just don't even think of it, haha. (I'm British. Explains things?)
And secondly, there's nothing wrong with sounding like Anne Shirley. In fact, it's good! :-D

  2. Super cute + classy, Charlotte! Love it. I actually have similar pieces to these, so I just may have to recreate this outfit.:)

  3. Oh, I love it! So cute, and I also love the pop of color.

  4. I've always spelled it grey, I assume it had to do with all the English books I read as a child? I just love your ensemble, and grey is one of my favorite colors (which always seems to confuse folks.) I like how all of the slightly heathered shades go together, it makes everything "match" so nicely. And the shoes! Delightful.

  5. I spell it “gray” because I'm an American. :) I actually prefer that spelling--I could easily get used to the alternative, but I don't really need to . . . if you know what I mean!

I love this outfit. The neutrals are spectacular on you. You look gorgeous :)

  6. Love this outfit, Charlotte! I'm a huge fan of neutrals, so this looks similar to ensembles I have worn. As to the question of spelling… I agree that grey looks more elegant, but gray looks more like it sounds, if that makes sense. And since I'm American, I'll definitely go with gray :)

  7. Really cute outfit, Charlotte! The heels are my favorite. :) I too like wearing lots of grey. It's a little less dressy than black, which is nice, but it still goes with everything.

I was wondering if you girls ever considered saying what brands each of your pieces in your outfit are. Since you buy a lot of your clothing used (which I love, as I'm all for used clothing as well!), knowing the brand would be useful for people like me who might want to find a similar item and keep an eye out for that brand when shopping. Just a thought. :)

  8. Hahahha I get so confused with British vs American spelling as I learned American spelling in school but when I moved to Australia they adopt British ones. I spell inconsistently all the time hahaha. Btw I love the grey on grey ensemble - I think you look so well put together! Very classy and chic at the same time and you look comfy and warm ahahha :)

  9. Cute outfit! I've always been confused on gray vs grey too! I've always ended up using gray though.
    Haha it's quite strange though...

  10. I go with grey, because it's the British way of spelling it and I spell everything the British way. I think it's because I learned English from British textbooks; but also because with the usual "-ise" vs "-ize" and related words, I like the look of it spelled with "s" better. :-) (And looking at your "advertise?" button, I guess you do, too!)

And ooh, I love your grey pumps with grey tights! It's my favourite part of this outfit, I think. Very elegant (the classic shape of those pumps definitely helps!). Although the striped sweater with pearls is also lovely.

Totally awesome outfit! I used to intermix the two until I learned in my linguistics courses that 'gray' is simply the American spelling. Now I just use that one!

  13. And I thought I was the only one bothered by the change from grey to gray. I always spell it grey and don't care if it's "wrong."

  14. Oh, I love that skirt! Thrift stores are a gold mine for classic, high quality wool skirts. At the skimpiest shop I can find at least two in my size. :)

  15. What a pretty skirt! It looks like one I have. I'm surprised you found that at a thrift store! It looks so classically vintage. Have you figured out an era for it? Is it a modern skirt? When I was helping my grandparents move, I was put in charge of the attic. I found 5 lovely wool skirts in various cuts and colors that were made in the 60s when my grandmother went back to work as a teacher. So fun! But anyway, I'm glad you found that skirt, it looks like it was made for you!

Question-What do you do about tights? Are the ones you're wearing in this picture sweater or stocking-weight? I love wearing sweater-weight in the winter, because stocking-weight can get so cold! But I've had trouble getting sweater tights to look nice in heels (your's do!), so resort to wearing boots, but it gets boring wearing boots so frequently. Any advice? Which type of tights do you prefer? :)
    ps. Grey. Always. :)

  16. Love love love your skirt!!!! :)
As for the spelling, I believe the American spelling is grAy (the As match), the English spelling is grEy (the Es match), and the Canadian spelling is grEHy. Oh wait...
Blessings on your week! Y'all have a lovely blog!
