After Christmas, came the Yuletide Ball. I was one of the prominent photographers to record the event (you saw the pictures I took here), and I wanted to do something a bit different, more special than turning up my ISO and getting a bunch of grainy so-so photographs. So I toyed a little bit with the idea of borrowing a 50mm lens from my photographer friend Jo. I was pretty darn thrilled when she complied with my little dream. We picked up the lens the next morning, and I play with it all day. Oh my. You should have seen me! I was prancing and squealing around the house like a little 5 year old with a new toy, clicking the shutter like crazy! Up until then, my passion for photography had mellowed quite a bit, and photographing an outfit or everyday event became a bit mundane and uninspiring… Borrowing this lens gave me a gallon of fuel to start my engine again and once more click the shutter!

Aside from borrowing Jo's lens (thanks, girl!!), I have been experimenting with my new VSCO presets which are just dreamy… Dad and Mom spoiled me with those this Christmas, and I have been swimming through the world of vintage film presets and filters ever since. Oh me, oh my! Sorry, but the photography on BFS is going to look a little different from now on… ;)
Something that Dad was talking to me about today in regards to photography, was how a good photographer's drive should not be the shmansy editing software and equipment (though those are such fun!), but the excitement of relating a story through the pictures they take. Needless to say, that is something I struggle with! So then, my personal resolution for this year, 2014, is to take pictures for the joy of telling a story, and to develop that talent. Not playing with the software or coveting backdrops and lenses; rather using those things to help me tell the story, not make me tell it, or not tell it at all. My drive should be communicating a tale through the photos I take. Yes, yes, that is what I resolve to do, by God's grace.
What is your personal resolution for 2014?

Lovely work! It's a world of difference moving beyond the kit lens, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteYes indeed it is, though I have found that there is an art to each type of lens, and you ain't never perfect the first try :)

Lovely pictures. :) The ones of the tree are my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI have many resolutions for this year! One of them is to finish the novel I am writing and hopefully publish it! I also want to work harder at glorifying God in everything I say, write, and do.
May God bless your new year.

Hi Heidi! My name's Natalie, and I noticed that you mentioned writing a novel. Good for you! I also love to write, and am currently writing a short story on my blog. I have the first three parts on my blog, and am still working on part 4. The story is getting longer than I initially expected, so I don,t know how many parts the story will have! :)
DeleteGod bless you and your writing!
