Classy on Sunday // Autumn at Last

Classy on Sunday // Autumn at Last
Hello hello!
There are probably many differences in the way Autumn officiates itself in each State, but I think that last week marked the "full bloom" of the season here in Southern Ohio. Every Summer I anticipate this time of year with many wonderings and thoughts about what vibrant colors the leaves will show, and thankfully I have yet to be disappointed by the autumnal pallet. I was quite inspired by what I was observing out our windows last week, thus it was without much hesitation that I plucked this dress off its hanger to wear it to Sunday service.

Many moons ago my kind mother made this 50's dress for me. It was around this time of year too, and I couldn't help but think that it was missing a layer of warmth. Being a very singular style of dress, I new my outfit needed a jacket that looked 50's, and so I convinced Mom to make the same bodice, and just shorten the skirt piece to about hip length. And that is how I got my Autumn 50's Sunday best. I love it. Have loved it. Will continue to love it. The lines spell perfection, no?

My hair is another story... I wasn't even certain that it would turn out to be acceptable no matter how I styled it! Eventually my fingers found the right way to flip and pin it in place and in the end I got a rather 40's looking hair do. Hmm. I told myself that nobody at Church would notice the difference in eras I was wearing, but for you vintage fanatics out there, I have a suspicion that you would think very differently. Haha! Oh well. Sometimes my hair begs to be put in a particular style depending on how I slept on it the night before, so I don't think I would have gotten anywhere with any other approach. ;P

These lovely heels were a GoodWill find from several years ago... actually I think I found them around the same time my dress was finished! I completely forgot about that coincidence! Anyhoo, although they are not the most comfortable footwear, they do add a completeness to any vintage outfit, and that is why I  like them.

Perhaps a little update on the current happenings here in the Boyer home is needed at this time? We three have had one of the most difficult weeks in our history of singing. Namely, we have come down with very bad colds, and we were supposed to have performed on Thursday at a retirement home, and again on Friday night at a retirement Village (with dinner provided), and to top it all off we were supposed to have appeared at another singing engagement tonight at a Church Social (also provided with dinner)! All had to be cancelled! Can you believe the irony in that? This was going to be one of our fullest weeks this Fall, and now it has turned into a week of staying home, relaxing with a hot cup of tea and tissues in either hand.

I can't say that we enjoyed making those "let-them-all-down" phone calls, but thanks to Brigi, we did. There were tears shed, and our hearts were needlessly filled with guilt. "Guilt?" Well, yes, but only because this was the first time we have had to make such a big let-down. "But you can't sing when your head is falling off from sneezing and coughing!" Yes, we know, but it doesn't eliminate the fact that many people over the course of three nights will have had to change their agendas because three young singers were ill. *sigh* It's just not fun...

On a contemplative note, we could have been spared from a car crash. We could have lost our voices. Something could have happened that would be far worse that what is happening now. What I am trying to say is, God is ultimately in control of everything that is happening all over the world presently, and we can't lift a finger without His will being done! This is the biggest comfort of all–we couldn't have done anything, even if we tried, to keep from getting this cold! I'll be honest with you, we do a lot of things to keep ourselves as healthy as possible to make these gigs, but this time the Lord decided we needed to stay home.

Ecc. 3:14 // 4:6 // 5:14

The LORD is good!

Do you prefer 50's or 40's attire?
What is your favorite Autumn color?
Have you let down people due to illness before?

Contentedly,

Jessica

  1. I hope that you ladies recover soon! Colds, even if they aren't the worst kind, always make us feel tired to easily and quickly. But since you have had to stay home for a time, I hope that you have a peaceful, restful time--moments in which to rejuvenate, so that you can once more face the business of a full schedule. :) God must want you to have some 'down time'. :)

I love both 40s and 50s attire, but 40s wins out for me every time. There is something about that era that appeals to me so strongly and just sweeps me away. :) I just love the feminine beauty of the 40s styles....especially the makeup and hair...

  2. This is such a darling outfit! :) I like the autumnal colors of your 50's dress. I probably prefer 50's to 40's attire, but both are lovely.
Sorry to hear you were sick and had to cancel your engagements. :( As you said though, God knows best! Get well soon.

  3. Your outfit is so pretty!! I love every bit of it! Do you know what pattern the dress is made from? I love fall dresses.
I am so sorry you got sick and had to cancel! I'm sure there was a very important reason. God is in control! I hope you feel better soon!!
I love 1950s dresses...a lot. But lately I have been loving 40s styles as much or more! It's all pretty!! :)

Jessica, that dress fits in with the season so perfectly....would you happen to know what pattern your mom used? It's so hard to find pretty patterns these days.
Thanks to all of you for the wonderful posts.
I enjoy your blog immensely, and am so glad for the inspirations it provides :)
    Blessings,

  7. It happens to me all the time... I've been going to a lady from our church for years now, helping out with her cleaning. She has two small and very active boys and both a rather large apartment and rooms where she offers speech therapy in the house, so a lot of cleaning to be done on a regular basis! So she offered it as a source of money for me and some relief for herself. (And I think it's also given me a much better idea of how it is to have children - seeing as I'm the youngest in the family.) I've had to excuse myself countless times by now... and autumn is especially fraught with illnesses. But sometimes it's simply better to be in peace and heal quickly instead of aggravating it with work, even if you're restless and feel you're letting them down when you have to cancel at the last moment because you've been hoping you'd get better... :P So get better, and maybe you'll get a chance to make it up for them!

Such a clever way to make a matching jacket! I love the fabric of the dress. It looks a lot like 18th century printed cottons, which I like, and the colours are just lovely. I love these deep blues and reds, although they can sometimes be a bit too rich for myself. But probably my favourite thing about autumn are the golden-yellow leaves and the golden-yellow light when it's sunny (which it is right now here!).

I think I prefer 1950s, mostly because I don't like the sharp shoulders of 40s and often don't like the hairstyles so much, at least where I myself am concerned. But I love all the drapery-like styles of late 30s and 40s, and the coat styles especially - there are so many unique ones, and also so many unique hairstyles now that I mentioned them.

  10. Your outfit is gorgeous! The colors especially! I've always loved the vibrant blue autumn sky against the fall colors of leaves and the colors in your outfit reminded me of that. :) I like the 50's clothes better than the 40's, but I *love* 40's shoes! Its too bad that you had to cancel your singing engagements! But as you said, God is in control. I hope you girls get better soon!

  11. Smashing dress dearie! The print is so wonderful!! Your Mother has a wonderful talent; I'm sure you girls call yourselves blessed to have her talent of craftiness (e.i. sewing) passed down to you. :)

I am so sorry to her about your unfortunate circumstances concerning this weekend you three were so eager for, had to be whisked away by illness. Nevertheless, you speak true faith by your attitude that it must have been what God wanted for you.

"Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD." Ps. 31:24

    Fondly,
    Cassie

  12. Love this dress!! I don't think I could choose between 40s and 50s. They're both so lovely :)

A few years ago, I was supposed to play the harp in my cousin's wedding, but I came down with chicken pox just a few days before. I know how bad you feel about canceling your plans. Prayers for you girls as you rest and recover from your colds.

    Blessings,
    Hannah
