Classy on Sunday // Shades of Blue

Classy on Sunday // Shades of Blue
Hello dearies! By the time you all see this post, my family and I will be up in Kalamazoo for a sort of holiday. Our Pastor's son is getting married to a gal in Kalamazoo (haven't you seen our song for them yet?), and then the next day we'll be stopping down in Holland for an impromptu tourist visit for my Birthday (which is the 21st!). Well enough about what we're doing this weekend! Let's talk about some other things, such as my outfit!

Never mind, the outfit can wait. I want to talk about something else. :D
This past Sunday our Pastor was preaching on the importance of music in the worship of God. I didn't take any notes, I never do, but I'll try and give you all a summary of his points. Throughout the Bible, you find that where there is any mention of praise, it also speaks of singing. If you look through the psalms, practically every. single. psalm speaks of praising and singing to the Lord. Even the longest chapter in the Bible (Psalm 119) is a song about the Lord's commandments and law. This point flowed into the next point which is: We need to be about the business of writing hymns unto the Lord.  We need to be writing songs about our Lord's might, glory and power over his enemies, and his mercy and grace to His people, not about how we feel, which is what quite a number of Christian songs these days sadly are about. Now, I know I am treading on controversial ground writing this up, but I feel I must say it. We are treading dreadfully close to our hymns being too similar sounding to the rest of the world's songs. We are too focused on ourselves in our hymns, and not focused enough on God.

One last thing that struck me about our pastor's sermon, was the coincidence of the fact that I had read 1 Chronicles, Chapter 9 just the night before, which spoke about the Levites and their responsibilities. The verse that specifically stood out to me, in the fact that I finally understood and could comprehend it's meaning, was verse 33 which says, "These are the singers, heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites, who lodged in the chambers, and were free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night." (1 Chronicles 9: 33, NKJV). You may think this is just some ordinary verse, as I did, until that night. Ever since I was little I had always thought that it was strange that these particular Levites didn't have to do any work except for singing. But now that I am a singer myself, I can completely understand exactly what this job entails. These Levites would not only have to sing unto the Lord, but also come up with the melody, the words, the harmonies for the singers, the parts for the instruments, organize everybody; and then after all that, finally finish their work by singing it before the Lord. Now that's an all day task! And I know that by just a few hours experience of writing parts from pre-written melodies.

So in other words, we should put effort into our songs to the Lord. THINK about what you're singing, and if you're writing a hymn, analyze if the words are more about your feelings, or about the Lord's glory, might, mercy and grace.

Well, on to my outfit! Which is probably what most of you clicked through to read about. I wanted to wear this silk skirt last Sunday. The only blouse that I had that would work was this blue blouse from Old Navy, and when I put the two together it worked perfectly (I wore the blouse backwards by the way)! I wanted to bring out the black in the skirt, so I borrowed this belt from Charlotte. What was rather funny is that the buckle is broken, so whenever we got home after Church, and were heading out to take these pictures, the buckle was almost practically folded in half. Yikes! So we had to wait a few minutes for the super glue that I applied to dry. It's still broken... Fudge.
My shoes are not the typical shoe shape that I normally wear, but Mom suggested that I wear them since they were the same color as the rest of my outfit. So I tried them on, and they were perfect. Maybe my pre-conceived notions about shoe-shapes that I like and don't like aren't so correct...

What was your sermon about?
Has God revealed anything new in His Word to you?
Have you ever thought about writing a hymn?
Do you have shoe shapes that you don't normally like to wear?

Blessings,

  2. I adore this outfit!! The blouse (even if it's backwards, hehe!) fits you and the skirt perfectly. :)

Our last sermon was entitled "4 Foolish Responses to The Lord's Invitation" and it was about the men in, pardon me for forgetting the verses, one of Jesus' parables. The Lord invited them to His supper but they all came up with an excuse not to go. Basically, it was about us and our own foolish excuses for not doing what He asks, or responding to His invitations.

  3. An Old Navy blouse turned back-wards? That's awesome, Brigid! And here I was convinced that you had handmade the blouse yourself, because it has such a lovely, unique, delicate look, as though it were lovingly made by hand.

Thank you for sharing your Pastor's sermon with us! I had never seen that verse from Leviticus. And you're right--so much church music today has become totally centered on us, the congregation, and not on Our Lord. This is a topic that my family and I have discussed alot! But of course, there are also centuries and centuries worth of beautiful hymns and sacred music from a long history of the Church. This music needs to be given its proper place again! :)

    1. Thanks so much for your sweet comment Genevieve!
I totally agree with you about older hymns. Our Church sings those types of hymns exclusively. We value history and historic music of the Church so much. With this blog post I was trying to be more general, as I know that not all Churches sing the old hymns, so I wanted to be more encouraging to future creativity in the area of hymn writing, and give a reminder that what we sing unto the Lord should be about Him and His work, and not us.

  5. You know, that's a very good point about many Christian songs being more about us than about Jesus. I was just listening to the Christian radio a few weeks ago and noticed that the song "What Faith Can Do" by Kutless didn't mention God by name once--well, maybe it did once, but no more. And that struck me in that moment. It's a good song, but at that time I thought that--you know, a lot of songs on Christian radio could be played on other radio stations. Hmm.

My favorite Bible passage this week has been this one: "Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me-- to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me." (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)

And shoe shapes...yes, I don't really like to wear shoes shaped in a "clunky" fashion :P Wedges are fine, but overly thick heels have never been my favorite. So you're not alone :)

Why don't you take notes in church? Don't you want to remember what the Pastor says?

    1. Hi Halye!

I do want to remember what my Pastor says, but I have never been much of a note taker, due to the fact that I rarely go back to look at notes after I have taken them, unless I made them for someone else. I find that note-taking is more distracting for me than just sitting and listening to the sermon.

  9. Funny; I've struggled with notetaking at church for a very similar reason as you, in that trying to put what the Pastor just said into my own words, on the spot- and writing down verses AND what he actually said- is just a little distracting. I've been working on it though. =P
I am very glad you mentioned that bit about the content of songs. Two years ago I made the decision to stop listening to K-LOVE because I had started to notice that the songs had a lot of "I" and "Me" and "My" in them, which I suddenly realized was very self focused. While listening to the song I was thinking more about the person singing than God's goodness! =(
Hymns on the other hand, are better about keeping the focus on His Love and Grace, which is a much better thing to have stuck in my head all day. ;)
Lovely outfit! I really admire the skirt; I like floral patterns like that. And the belt does a lovely job of pulling the black from the skirt to make it a complete outfit. =)

  10. Hi Brigid! This outfit is wonderfully blended! Yup- sometimes Moms can be right about a certain outfit item, even if it does take us out of out comfort zone! Ha ha! The shoes match perfectly!

Those are some great thoughts on the LORD's worship and what it should edify and mean to us! Thank you dear!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful time this weekend! How close to us you are going to be! Have a wonderful birthday!

    love,
    Cassie
