How We Eat (Video)

Hello everyone!
Today is a big day! Do you know why? We just finished filming our How We Eat (Video)! So sit back and relax as you "drink in" another ounce of our flavor of life. Enjoy!

Note: When I talked about helping out our local famers, I neglected to say how we help them! Sorry! We help them by buying their foods–chicken (which we get in exchange for helping butcher them! Yep! I have seen it all!), eggs, veggies, beef, pork, and the like. Now swapping work for food has always worked between the farmers and us, so there is a win win on both sides. What do we swap? Dad and I did a logo together for a farmer, and I did a logo for my flower farmer friend, and in both circumstances, we received products from their farm! Cool, eh? (You can see the logos on each site.)

I also forgot to mention that we make our own Sour Dough bread from a starter, rather than relying on the grocery store bakery. We love this kind of bread, but even better, Mom makes it with organic, unbleached flour, so there is no guilt when we sink our teeth into a buttered slice! Also, anything made with a culture (fermented food/starter) is many times more nutritious than foods that are not.

Here are the links to: GMO's, Microwaves, and White Refined Sugar vs. Organic Cane Sugar.

I hope that you all were able to gain a little bit of knowledge from this mini documentary! We are not perfect, and our lives are in a constant flow of change; so if you were convicted or worried that maybe you need to change some things in your own diet, don't become consumed by it. We made those big changes in our diet as a family, and we did it over time. It takes a while to source good foods. We are still in search of better options! But if it's just you who wants to change, you won't get anywhere if the rest of your family is not on the same boat. So pray about it, and rely on the Lord to direct you. I don't want to burden you by our way of life; like what it says in Romans 14, Paul exhorts us to not lord it over each other if one eats vegetables and another eats meat. We are all on a different journey. So be content and satisfied, and don't stress about changing everything all at once! Let it happen... organically/naturally, as Dad is always putting it!

Having said this, it is still a good idea to share this information with your family! We are what we eat after all is said and done. Discuss it, and be on the look out for more healthy foods. That last piece of advice is probably the best, because as soon as you begin practicing moderation and scouting out for better foods, your life will begin to change as well!

Keep it simple and organic.

Have you heard of Food Inc.?
Did you know that microwaves are dangerous?
Do you eat organic foods?

Fondly,

    1. Yes we will! I guess we will be making a series of this How We Eat post! Ha ha!

It's great to hear from you Mrs. Seifert! I'll admit (ashamedly) that I have not visited your lovely blog in quite some time, but will make an effort to update myself with your family's goings on.

We all greet you warmly from the Midwest!

Wow, this is great! I *especially* appreciate your final written section -- it can be easy to feel lesser than others when you're just getting started on something that they are a lot farther ahead on, such as this. I appreciate your caution and humility in sharing this with your readers. Praise the Lord that we don't have to try to change everything at once!!!

  3. Lovely video ladies! My family eats pretty similarly to you -organic, non-GMO, no microwave, etc. Last year we did the Paleo diet (basically no grains or sugar) for about 6 months. Now we are eating both grains and sugar, but in much smaller quantities than before. I heard Jessica mention that you make your own ice cream, and I'm very curious about what recipe and machine you use. I love making ice cream but I haven't found a recipe that I'm happy with yet. Maybe you would consider sharing your process for making ice cream here on the blog.
    God bless!

    1. Hello Nuala!

It is so great to know that so many of our followers are on the same page as we are! It makes me more reassured that the Kingdom of God is being advanced in even this area of life!

We would be glad to share with you the recipe we use to make ice-cream, but if you are looking for a non icy, non-rock-hard recipe, I have to warn you, you won't find it here. We are always coming across this problem with the making of this desert, so much so, that I even looked it up on the internet and found that the store bought brands vs. homemade differ in creamy consistency due to the machines the manufacturers use. They practically whip air into their mixtures to get a lovely velvety mouthfeel. Kinda sad, and very disappointing, but if you want creamy home made ice cream, you will have to either add more sugar (which doesn't sound like an option in your family. Understood.), or you will have to by a really high quality ice-cream maker.

Hope this helps! We will still post a recipe.

      Love,

    2. Thanks for replying Jessica!
It's too bad that the machine makes such a difference in the consistency... very interesting to know though! I'm still looking forward to the recipe! :) Thanks again!

  4. Our family is also interested in eating healthy, and natural foods, but like you said too, we're not perfect. We get most of our organic foods through a place called Azure Standard (https://www.azurestandard.com) which has been wonderful!
Oh yes, microwaves are very dangerous, and we have finally gotten rid of ours. We replaced it with a taster oven, which takes a bit of getting used to, but is much healthier.
And just because the microwave topic made me think of it, have you seen the Jostie Flick about microwaves? (http://www.jostieflicks.com/2013/04/how-microwaves-are-harmful/)

    1. Hi Bethany!

Wow! Would you believe it? We order from Azure Standard too!!! What a coincidence!

Nope, I have never heard of the Jostie Flick on microwaves, but I will look it up! Thanks!

    1. Hello Anna,

We like to eat Mom's Best brand, Kashi, and Ancient Grains brand from Cost Co.. For years we made our own granola, but just recently we have been buying the Ancient Grains granola, and we like it a lot!

      Thanks for the comment!

  7. Great video! I'm glad to see that you linked an article from Dr. Mercola, who I read articles from also! The actual video quality was really good too-maybe you should do a post on photography/videography? :) Thanks for sharing and being so specific!

    1. Hi Ariella!

I think that would be a great idea to do a post on how we set up for videos and photography! That will have to be a little while on down the road perhaps... we will see.

I am so glad you enjoyed the video! This is good news as I don't like talking in front of a camera much.

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

  8. Excellent video, Jessica! Since moving out here to the "country" 7 months ago we've slowly detached from our all organic/non GMO eating because the nearest health food store is about 45 minutes away and honestly, it's just more convenient to go to Walmart & stock up there! Watching your video has really been encouraging to try and stop consuming as many potato chips and other not so healthy food :) Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we ought to care for them :)

We have watched Food Inc. & loved it! I also highly recommend watching the Genetic Roulette Documentary, it is so so informative!

    1. Hi Rosi!

That is so sad you no longer have the convenience of a health food store nearby! But I understand this dilemma very well as we have to shop at normal grocery stores too. That is one con about living in the country. Some times if we are in town, we will make a point to visit a health food store, but that is rare. We mostly just look carefully at all the labels, and by the products that state there are no additives, artificial anythings, and especially non GMO. At least our two families have gardens that supplement our diets! Praise the Lord for this!

I have never heard of the Genetic Roulette Documentary! It sounds good though!

Thank you so much for commenting!

  9. This was very good. Everything made sense, no weird miracle concoctions. :P These steps were good for the people who have learned to eat healthier foods and are looking to take the next steps to healthier living. I didn't know about the problems with microwaving until now. Thanks for posting! :) Also, I may have previously accidentally posted a comment on one of your posts on my dad's account so if you see a guy say something about wearing dresses, don't worry, it was me! :P

  10. Really enjoyed the video! We eat fairly similar to you all; whole, real foods with no added junk. We used to eat out all the time, but now just the thought of is grosses me out! Something I'd like to work on is getting fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. I don't eat nearly as many veggies as I should, and supporting local business is becoming more important to me.

Last year I discovered I was allergic to dairy, and earlier this year gluten as well, so eating out at all is pretty much out of the question, especially if I don't want any preservatives and such. But when I'm at home I tend to forget that I really have allergies, as it's much easier to make delicious food that I can eat. Plus having a mom and sister who are also allergic to gluten makes it much easier than if I was on my own. And thank goodness for all the yummy Paleo recipes out there!

  11. This was so fantastic, I don't even have the words to express this! I am amazed by how similar my family's diet is to yours, even down to the light supper on Sunday evening and using glass containers. Is popcorn usually part of your Sunday supper meal? It's a tradition that I've heard a lot of people have and it's something we've done for my whole life.

You mentioned that you used to go to fast food restaurants. I'd love to hear more about why you all made the switch/what inspired and convicted you to change to the diet you have now. I loved Food, Inc. as well! I found it to be extremely convicting and fascinating, although depressing at points. I am definitely an environmentally-conscious person, so I find all the food discussions fascinating for both the health and the environmental reasons.

Anyway, thanks so much for doing this video! Will there be further installations? If so, you can be sure that I will be watching them!

  12. Interesting! Your food video is beautifully filmed, and I love the text slides too.
I SO agree with your stance on lower-fat foods... so many times they add sugar or other weird things to compensate for the lack of fat, which I'm not a fan of at all. I do keep snacky foods around, but I've swapped over to things like roasted almonds or grain crackers with goat cheese when I need something to get me through a busy day. I definitely stick to a simple-ingredients diet as much as possible, although I'm not totally sold on the rage against GMOs or the mania for raw and organic foods. (Too much time around scientists will do that to you. Also a small budget...) I feel similarly about the whole microwave thing... I've seen people bring it up before, but I don't feel like the body of evidence is overwhelming or particularly ... reputable? So I microwave leftovers (only in glass, naturally!) and use it sometimes to quickly cook veggies and to cook potatoes, which I think is the best use for it!
I just LOVE the routine you have laid out for your menus throughout the week. I admit that I'm terrible at food planning most of the time, but when I DO have things planned out, everything goes smoother. Breakfast is pretty consistent (homemade granola and yogurt, toast with eggs, or toast with peanut butter and jam depending on my mood and the weather) but plotting out the rest of the meals is a struggle. I definitely have a few areas to work on improving how I feed and take care of my body!
