Well hello there. I decided to take a wee brake from my Hair Parlor series and write about one of my pre-leaf-fall outfits. For this one I took a little bit of everything I love from my closet and put it together to create a soft, deliciously neutral look, complemented by tiny flecks of color for interest. I hope you like it!

I had curled my hair the night before using sponge rollers, and because I was feeling slightly frisky I tied it all up using my scarf turban tutorial, and pinned it in place with this lovely Lilla Rose flexy clip.
I used to hardly wear any sort of fancy hair accessories in my hair for every day styles, but ever since our dear friend began advertising her Lilla Rose business on our site, I have been made more and more aware of how versatile and extremely comfortable these gorgeous products are. In fact, just the other day I was wearing a store-bought, soft fabric head band until I realized I was coming down with one of my awful headaches. I immediately took the headband off, and replaced it with the comfortable Lilla Rose beaded head band. What a difference! My headache decreased to a bearable throb, and I completely forgot I was even wearing a head band until I looked in the mirror that evening! I don't know how Lilla Rose got the tension just right, but I am so thankful they took the time to make a such a comfortable product! :)

This might sound a little funny to you all, but as Charlotte and I were picking out these photos, I suddenly realized how much my skirt accentuated my small stature! I don't believe I have ever talked about my height on our blog before, but if you all haven't noticed, I happen to be the shortest out of the three of us, even though I happen to be the eldest in the family. ;p This has been sort of a challenge for me within the past three years as my sisters sprouted up, and I remained... um... the same vertical measurement *cough*.
With this encumbrance comes many opportunities for me to learn humility and how to comfort myself using odd assuring thoughts, such as: well, you will always be able to squeeze into tight places; or–it will hurt less when you fall due to the minimal distance which you have from your head to the ground; and my favorite–it will be easier to find a husband (I hope!).
Where was I going with all of this? Oh yah! My skirt. So in all of this, I have become painfully aware that knee length skirts only point out that I am not tall, or even a regular height, and so I have to be selective in what I pick out in the stores. Even sweaters, coats and hats must be carefully analyzed before they're purchased, that way I don't invest in something that will swallow up my small frame. Sure, buying size extra small can be nice, but have you ever been in one of those many awkward instances when people (particularly your super vigilant sisters) point out incessantly how tiny you are? If you have, I would shake your hand if I could, and say, "Glad you could join the party!". But for those who are average, be thankful you are average, and not in either extreme. Just stop complaining, for the sake of the tall and short, please.

But I don't go about hiding from everyone. I don't shrink even smaller when accused of being so tiny. I carry myself as best I can, and be glad for the many blessings I do have. I can sing, I can dance (well sort of), and I am not blind, or in a wheelchair. In fact I have it pretty good! And even if the Lord takes all of that away from me I will still call myself blessed. Ultimately, the one greatest comfort I know is found in His Word:
Psalm 139: 13-16
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother's womb.
I will praise You,
For I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
I thank my Creator, Savior, and King for giving me life, breath, and love from His all encompassing Being! Even if I were to lift a finger against His will, I could not, because He purposed for all things to come to pass as they once were, are now, and will be in the days to come. Glad am I that we do not have to figure out how to control this vast universe! Only the the Highest One could ever perform what He has decreed to be. Glory to Him, now and forever more, and don't ever say I hate my height!
Are you short, average, or tall?
Do you have difficulties when shopping for your size?
In what ways have you grown to accept your frame as God made it to be?
Soli Deo Gloria!

I am tall... like 5'10" kind of tall. I have always enjoyed being tall - I can reach things (very helpful!!), see over people's heads, and I am unique among my friends. However, sometimes my height is not as helpful. Shopping can be really hard for me. I am a very slim girl as well, and that makes it hard to find clothes that are big enough lengthwise, and yet small enough widthwise. Often a size small shirt does not fit because the hem doesn't reach my waist. Yet a medium shirt is baggy. I solve this problem by wearing long camis or tanks under most of my shirts. This keeps them modest and cute. Another shopping problem I have is skirts. My policy for skirts is the hem has to hit below the knee. The maxi skirts designed to be really long work (although they are a bit shorter on me), but the skirts designed to hit at the knee are usually just a bit too short. Thus, I end up wearing maxi skirts all the time. I remedy this by having to spend a little more time searching for skirts to find just the right length to go past my knees. Other times, I sew on a bit of fabric or lace to the bottom of skirts that are a bit too short. I rarely wear heels, because that makes me look extremely tall, but am thankful for the gift of not having to wear uncomfortable shoes!!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wonder how being tall will affect my future (I am taller than some guys, and sometimes they complain about it - jokingly), but I know that if my height is all it takes to turn a guy off, he was not the right man for me. My heart is what matters, and I know that while man looks at the outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)
It's always good to look from God's perspective.
I enjoy your lovely blog!
~Rebecca
Rebecca, you sound beautiful! 5"10 and slim is exactly what most models are. :) Don't be down because of your height -- I know far too many girls who would *love* to be as tall as you. And, as you said, the Lord looks at the heart, and that is *truly* what matters most. :) PS I'm 5"7 and would love to grow another inch or so. :)
DeleteThank you for sharing with us Rebecca! I know some girls who are tall and slim, tall and average, tall and big boned, and then I know girls on the other spectrum in the same order. All in all, we do need to accept our frames as they are, and learn to give of ourselves with all that we are and have.
DeleteAnd you are right on to say that if a guy shuns you for your height, he is definitely not for you!
Cheers!

Rebecca, you sound like a model! I would not be upset by having that height :) I am on the average-ish side (5'7") and have always thought it would be fun to be truly tall. Have you read the Anne of Green Gables books? Anne is always described as being tall and willowy...I think that those Edwardian styles beautifully accentuate that figure. Have you considered some sweeping skirts and the like? I think it was Jessica that did a post with an Edwardian-era inspired outfit.
DeleteI'm a tall gal. And it can be sooo hard to find clothing that's long enough and flattering! This was a great, thought-provoking post, I appreciate it very much. And may I say that the B&W picture in the middle is adorable? It looks so...Edwardian! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful blog post Jessica! Both the pictures and your words. I just want to let you girls know how inspiring you are! I always look for your posts! I am tall 5ft 10 1/2. :) It puts me an inch taller than the majority of the young men I know.
ReplyDeleteThank you from the bottom of our hearts', Ariella! :)

I'm short as well, always have been, and now my only family member that's shorter is my 12-year-old brother. That won't last much longer, though! :) I also have short hands and feet, even for my height.
ReplyDeletePersonally I've never found being short a negative thing; I actually really like being short! Even if I can't reach stuff that's up high, I can still fit into smaller places that others can't and it worked real well when I played basketball when I was younger! Friends, family, and even my co-workers like to joke about my height all the time. It's never really bugged me; it's quite funny, actually! They all get a good laugh out of it, though. :D
The only real downside really is finding clothes that are small enough, as even when I can find an XS size, sometimes it still doesn't fit properly. And maxi skirts are always a mile too long! But sometimes I'm able to find a skirt that would be too short on me if I was taller, but fit's me perfectly at my height. That always makes me happy!
I too have heard how knee length skirts aren't as flattering on us shorties, but for me it don't really matter. As long as I like it and feel confident in it (and of course am following God's will), it doesn't matter what others think. I'm glad God made me short; I wouldn't want to be any other way. :)
I am so glad to know another young lady who can laugh with the best of them about her shortness, Sereina! You have such a bright and lively spirit, and I can tell that you are perfectly satisfied with the tent the Lord has allotted you. I know that with every child of God, He has a purpose to make us who we are, inside and out.
DeleteI do know what you mean about some XS things not fitting, though. I have tried on many things that still don't work, but have found many others that do.
Thank you for sharing yourself with us Sereina!

I can totally relate! I am the shortest in my family (4 foot 11 and pretty much done growing). It can be tough, even it ways such as casting in a play (when looks and height are important) and especially when buying jean and pants. They are always toooo long. I usually cuff my straight leg jeans and my grandma hemmed a pair of sweat pants I own. However, it's useful sometimes, when a skirt that would be too short on an "average size" person is the perfect length on me. I used to kind of ignore it, but honestly, laughing about it turned out to be a lot more fun! My friends and I are always making 'short jokes' and they enjoy playfully teasing me. I enjoy teasing myself too! My height is such a part of who I am, and learning to love it and laugh at it has been made everything so much easier. I still struggle and even get annoyed with things it can bring but I face it with a smile and laugh!!
ReplyDeleteThat outfit is so fun and colorful!!

So cute! I love your stockings and the turban! I am average height... But my younger brothers are shooting up and making me feel quite short, haha!
ReplyDeleteI love your thoughts about accepting how God has made us instead of resisting it. Thank you for another encouraging post!

Thank you dear. It can be difficult sometimes to figure out what to write, but as soon as the thought of being insecure about height popped into my head, I knew that that was what I had to write about.

I love love love this outfit! And despite what you expressed about knee-length skirts creating a shortening effect, I think this looks fabulous on you. Not to mention warm!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to have to try the turban with one of my flexis, as my hair is currently too short to do other flexi styles. Thanks for all the inspiration, as usual, Jessica!
Ooh goody! I hope it works for you, Kira!

You are such a natural beauty, Jessica. I am a teensy bit tall but that was always magnified by the fact that my older sister is shorter than me by a good amount. It made me feel embarrassingly conspicuous. I have come to accept that hight has little to do with beauty. Tall ladies have the height of models and petite ladies have a very feminine and classicly ladylike size. Both are lovely the way that the Lord has created them. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to put it Hannah! I am so glad you said that, because now that I think about it, all of my role models are small like me, and one of the things I admire about them is how ladylike they are. :)
DeleteThank you for chiming in, dear.

I am taller than most girls of my acquaintance--I'm 5'8.25", aka about four inches taller than any other girl my age I know (besides the ones in my family). This bothers me a little bit, but not as much as it used to. I'm more concerned about my big frame, which over the years I have grown to accept and appreciate a little bit more. :) It's interesting to me that even those girls we think look perfect all the time have insecurities about their figure or height.
ReplyDeletedance a real
Lovely outfit, Jessica! I am about average (about 5 ft 4inch) but I do have trouble shopping, because of the fact that I am a bit slimmer-than-average. It's hard to find clothes that fit my standards as to tightness in chest and legs without looking frumpy waist-wise. Fun belts are my friends. :) Thank you so much for sharing your personal problems/anxieties. It means so much! I have often struggled with discontent about certain aspects of my physical shape, and have come to realize that, as long as I'm healthy, shape doesn't matter as much as a Godly attitude and spirit. You all have encouraged me so much in this area, keep up the good work! :)

Hmmm...I suppose I'm the token average person in the group ( just a hair under 5'7"). The weird part is that in any room enter, I'm usually either the shortest person or the tallest, so I never really feel average :P
ReplyDeleteI find it odd that you say the skirt emphasizes your height...I love this outfit, and I always think you look elegant in the pictures. Your height has never occurred to me:)

I'm happy with my height at 5"7 and wouldn't be surprised if I grew another inch or so. :) You look incredibly gorgeous, Jessica, regardless of your height -- you glow in every picture I've seen of you! You're simply beautiful. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this post! xx

Goodness! Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Acacia. I didn't write that post to call attention to myself; merely to talk about the subject and how I have learned to accept who I am in Christ, among my brethren. To know that we live and move and have our being in Him is the greatest thing. Nevertheless, I thank you so much for your kind encouragement. :)

Hello ladies! I've been perusing your site and am enjoying it very much. I'm especially loving the photoshoots. Charlotte is certainly very talented! I was wondering, would she mind very much sharing which of the presets in the VSCO 01 pack she used for Brigid's senior shoot? I really love the way she edited them. :)

Hi there! Thanks so much for your sweet comment! I really can't remember exactly what presets I used on Brigid's senior photos; sorry! My favorites of the presets, however, are Standard Fuji 800z and 800z- and Standard Kodak Portra 160.
DeleteHope this helps!

I joke about being short...it can be rather fun, really. :D It used to fret me some, but not for the reasons you would probably think.
ReplyDeleteOh yes...finding clothes to fit me. That can be interesting since I'm petite in some areas and, ahem, broad, in others. Personally, I find knee to mid-calf length skirts make me look less "dumpy" than really long skirts, so that is my preference. (Not to mention that I step on my hem with long skirts more easily. :D)
I am tallish 5' 9" and one inch taller than my Mom and older sister.
ReplyDeleteI love my height, although I have an abnormally long Audrey Hepburn neck, so I have been lovingly dubbed the giraffe by my relatives :) oh well.
FOR LONG WAISTED GIRLS: Sonoma brand (kholes) shirts run long in the waist and arms and are super comfy!!!
I have a aunt who is around 5' 4"-5" and I think her height is really pretty and feminine!!!
Thank you for this post Jessica!!!
Ps.
You girls all have amazingly beautiful eyes!
How tall are you, Jess? I used to have such a struggle (& still have my moments) with being short(4'11) , especially as people don't seem to take me seriously because I still look like a kid, but it doesn't matter because despite my size, the Lord has called me to be His daughter and for that I am eternally grateful! Thanks so much for this beautiful post! You look absolutely lovely :)
ReplyDeleteI'm the shortest in my family at 4'9, and also one of the shortest people I know. For years I was taller than my sister Anna, but then I stopped growing at maybe 12 years old, and then she stopped too. :P Now the tallest is my 15 year old sister at 5'3. I like being short, and I really don't mind the teasing. My biggest issue is fluctuating weight. . .we all have rather large ribcages. . .no short-and-slim for me! I just tend to look kind of stocky, so I'm careful to stay away from A-line skirts (Hemmed maxi's are lengthening AND slimming!) Another thing I've run into a lot is a lack of respect. I don't get it as much now at almost 24, but for years strangers thought I was much, much younger. When I was in my late teens I was still getting guessed at 12-15. Not. . .um. ...the best recipe for self esteem! :P My mom, who is also very short and young looking, was very instrumental in encouraging me to find confidence in myself. I think a lot of vertically challenged people are "fighters" because of these challenges and others. Hopefully in a good way. ;) Anyhow, though I'll never have a slim figure or long legs, :P I've learned to be comfortable with who God has made me. If anything, I'm usually the first one with the short jokes! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica!!
ReplyDeleteI am also the oldest and shortest!! Except for my younger sister and she is ten but very close to passing me!! I am 5'2" so that does put me in the short category. :) But I have come to realize that short isn't all that bad. I admit that when people use me as a headrest, that can get a small bit annoying but besides that..... I have also come to realize that God has made me just the way He desires and will continue to show His perfect will to me!! Thanks for the encouragement!! :)
