Classy on Sunday // Sweatering in Summer

Classy on Sunday // Sweatering in Summer
Hello there!
I don't know about you all, but it seems like it has been forever since I have done a C.O.S! Perhaps it is because of my one week sabbatical from posting How We Play? Nevertheless, the whole shebang feels out of sync. What shall I share with you all? What would be interesting to talk about? I wish this was not a C.O.S, and that I could show you the happenings of this week, but for the lack of photos, and the demands of a schedule I will have to make do, and bring you up to date as I go along.

Classy on Sunday // Sweatering in Summer
Classy on Sunday // Sweatering in Summer
First of all, if there has been any Summer in which we have been the most comfortable, this is it! I am wearing a cozy angora shrug with this sundress for goodness' sake! Every day has been filled with calm breezes, dancing treetops, and temperatures so subtle that you can hardly tell the thing called temperature exists! The Lord has surly blessed us here! Brigi tells me that the midwest region used to be like this all the time in years past, and we are hoping against hope that such tranquil forecasts will stay all year long for many years to come. We shall see...

Secondly, my own personal/spiritual life, the one that only I and God can view together, has been in a little bit of turmoil lately. Some of our readers may or may not remember that I have been in the possession of a flock of homing pigeons for some time, and just this year, due to the great demands for our girls' voices, I have continually been pressed to find some way to leave this animal husbandry behind. I love birds with all my heart! And if there is one thing that is most hard for me to do is give up a responsibility that has long been my own. So what should I do? I sought out the Lord in this matter, and I found my help in His providential timing.

My flock has been absent for four whole days now. The backyard is silent, and only their loft remains to be the key reminder that they once dwelt here. A fine old gentleman, who has raced homers all his life, bought them off of me after discovering an ad I put up at our local feed store. I did gain a little profit from them, but my happiness is grounded in the fact that they were going to a good home. From the day that they left in the back of the gentleman's truck, the feeling of my purpose in life has been shifted around a bit. In many ways, things are the same; singing, blogging, household chores, etc.. But just like a tree during the approach of Winter, a part of me is growing dormant. Waiting for Spring is a slow process. Yet, their is a time and a place for all things–a difficulty hard to accept.

With saying goodbye to this little part of my life, I have, naturally, begun to look for other ways to spend my time. One day I woke up and was instantly spurred into a furious stream of thoughts and ideas of what I could do. I was confronted with the idea of a business; but what could I make? I mused over writing; but what would I write? I considered just about everything, until my mind was frazzled and my head was turned into a spinning top of confusion! I cried out to the Lord to answer my thoughts and my puzzlement, and He gave me this. A dear friend of mine wrote a post on the topic of wanting admiration, and whether it is bad or good to want such a thing. After absorbing every word of it, I sat back, and thought,"What was I thinking? I must be content with the gifts I have been given to use for the joy of others and the glory of God! That is my calling right now. Why else did I give up the winged creatures I loved so dear? So that I could pursue this calling with all my might!" And that is just what I am going to do.

"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27

May this be the balm for all troubled hearts. :)

Have you worn a sweater this Summer?
What has the Lord been helping you to see anew in your life?
Do you understand your calling yet?

Peace to you in Christ.

  1. Awesome to see a COS post again! I love your outfit; lovely sweater, dress, and hair style! Yes, I've been wearing a sweater or jacket on and off all summer (have one tied around my waist atm just in case I feel a chill).

  2. Oh, I love the sweater and the dress and the combination. We have to wear sweaters to church in the summer often because the air conditioning is on so high!

  6. Such a pretty outfit! I always love these Classy on Sunday posts. We've been having similar weather here and I was surprised that a cardigan actually felt good last night by the campfire!

It was so interesting to read about your interest shift from homing pigeons to other things. I've been thinking about similar things. I have taken formal piano lessons since the age of 6 and I finally decided that it was time to let that go. At first I felt bad about it, but now my head is swarming with ideas of things to do to fill that activity that took so much of my time. So, anyway, I understand that funny feeling of letting go of something that you've done for so long, but there's also that joy of finding new things, too. :)

    1. Thank you so much for your kind, solacing words Grace. It means a lot to me when followers like you reach out to us girls and share your similar experiences. I remember when I quite my formal piano lessons too, and how different it was. Funny, I actually stopped taking piano so that I could focus more on my white pigeons (I wanted to turn them into a business by releasing them at weddings ... hem, hem) and now I have given them up to turn my full attention on blogging and singing. It amazes me how God can lead us down different paths, ultimately to find our true callings! Even singing with the girls is temporary (I would like to hope) and that eventually I will get married and have a family of my own. I pray that that calling is my ultimate calling.

      Thanks for the comment!

  7. Jessica, thank you so much. This post is beautiful (and your outfit the epitome of loveliness) but what meant the most to me about this past was your sharing of your struggles and how you turned to God to help you. I am in a very similar position--I'd be grateful for your prayers!

Thank you again for your sweet example.

    1. Dear sweet Genevieve, I know I can sympathize with you regarding that awful, almost raw, feeling of not knowing what the Lord wants you to do. There are so many things I know we both have the capability of doing, but it is the Lord's final say in what He would have us do. After all, He writes our stories first, and we play the part. He will alway direct us, even when it doesn't seem like He is. Sometimes, we come across times in which we must abide by contentment, and wait and see what He has in store–or so I have heard. Be comforted. He makes strait the crooked, and with grace beautifies the barren wasteland with fruitfulness.

I will be praying for you my dear. Thank you for telling me this. It comforts me too. :)

      Love in Christ,

  9. Well-expressed. :-) The summer here in New England has NOT been temperature-less, but that just makes me enjoy the autumn weather more when it arrives. My family has kept pigeons in the past ... They are the sweetest birds. So glad that the Lord provided a good home for them. May He bless your obedience.

  10. What a lovely outfit, Jessica! I'm glad you are all enjoying such a mild summer. :)
Thanks for sharing about your struggles with finding what to do in your life after the void left by taking care of your flock. It sounds like you are learning some good lessons. :) Lately, I've just been having it drilled into me that my life is not about me, but about glorifying God, whatever that may look like for an individual.

    1. Mm... I hope I can say that I have "been there" already in being forced to realize that my life is not to be spent for myself. That is definitely a hard lesson to bear. I know that all throughout my younger teen years, I struggled greatly with selfishness, and didn't even realize the magnitude of it until I watched my sisters go through the same phase, and Mom told me that I was just like them. The difficulty is that I still am selfish, and there are times when I have to step back and remind myself to give, rather than to receive. I will be thinking and praying for you my friend.

God bless you in every way.

Nope, no summer sweaters for me ;) I complain too much
As it is about the heat without adding an extra layer.

Your outfit's beautiful, Jessica! Alas, it's too hot where I live to wear a sweater right now, but I love how you styled it.
Also, thank you for sharing about your pigeons. I know that couldn't have been an easy decision. I am also confronted with something I have to let go of, and then where to go from there, so I certainly can empathize.

  15. This is an absolutely gorgeous, put-together outfit! I wore a sweater to church too... :) Thanks for sharing about your struggles, it helps to realize that other girls are in the same place I am. I'm going through a similar season of changes and struggles: most of my friends are older than me, and I'm having a hard time watching them go off to college and start relationships and things like that; I feel like myself and our friendships are being left behind forever. I sympathize with you, Jessica - it's hard to just sit back and trust God that things will be OK in the end. But He will give us the strength to do it. My dear friend just shared this verse with me, it's very common yet very true - "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." II found it extremely encouraging. You'll get through this time, and you'll be alright. Our God promises it. Keep trusting, sister!

  16. Beautiful outfit Jessica! Thank you so much for your encouragement. I am also at a point where I thought I had everything figured out in a certain area, and I had all my plans ahead of me, when God chose to close that door. It's been very hard and disappointing for me, but I've been reminding myself of the Reverend Mother's words from "The Sound of Music": "When the LORD closes a door, somewhere He opens a window." :)
    Love,
