Classy on Sunday // Good Ol' Blue

Gunne-Sax_12
Happy (early) Lord's Day everyone!
To say that I am ecstatic to share this vintage costume with you all is an understatement. I LOVE THIS DRESS!!! And after having it hang in your closet blanketed in-between the rest of your "Church-going" attire,  one forgets that it has never been seen by the faces on the other side of the internet world. So, ladies and gentlemen, here it is to be viewed today – I give you my beloved, Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax!

Gunne-Sax_10
Late in the evening on Saturday night, I rested my elbows on my closet dresser as my eyes roved mercilessly over my Sunday Bests. What to wear? Then I spotted the white, blue, and orange pinstripe plaid sleeve of my dear old Gunne Sax. Oh of course!
Gunne-Sax_5
The glorious satisfaction of buttoning up the front of this costume must be very much like the feeling cowgirls get as they pull on their favorite blue jeans – they slide right up, and fit in all the right places. Oh yah, this old vintage is my favorite pair of blue jeans. Most definitely.

The tale behind the whereabouts of this dress is a simple one, but a thousand words could be said about its many adventures I will never know about.

It was a cold winter Sunday morning when our family was about to retire from the beautiful scene of fellowship amongst the dear saints, when the mother of an acquaintance of mine approached me with a Kroger sack full of some dark-blue material. "Jessica, this used to fit me at one point, and has even had the opportunity to be passed around from each of my nieces. The fact is, nobody fits it any more, and judging by your figure, it looks to be about your size." She added as an after thought, "Oh yes! And it's a Gunne Sax dress! If you have never heard of them, you can be sure that your Mom and I grew up wearing them in our teens!" And before I knew how precious of a garment I was holding in my arms, we were traveling back over the country roads, bound for home.

That day Mom had to remain home for some illness or something of that sort, so when we returned and I excitedly proclaimed the whole story of my new possession, here eyes got as big as silver dollars, and she told me with an envious grin, "I always wanted my very own Gunne Sax, but your Grammy was too stubborn and sewed me one instead. You are so lucky! Ha! Now I get to see you girls wear something I only dreamed of having!" I felt quite honored after that, and even a little guilty. After all, any daughter would be if her mom spent her teen years wishing for something that you now held in your hands.

After exclamations and a few more old tales, I ran upstairs and pulled the dress on. Just like a pair of old well fitting jeans. Just like a charm. Just like an old vintage piece ought to be; loved, worn, and full of memories.

One thing I must point out before I say any more, because this dress has had its better days, I have to push a safety pin in-between the the two middle buttons below and above the waste line. Why Ms. McClintock never put the button right on the waistline I shall never know, but it would have been a very smart idea. Who likes a puckered button front? (No. It's not because the dress is too tight on me. Its because somebody who wore it before me wore it when it fit a bit too tight.) And another thing – the top button hole on the dress was well used before it came to me, so it likes to fly open when I'm not looking. I was spinning myself silly while we took these shots, and during the time we were out there, the button came undone! Whoopsy-daisy! (I am going to have to tell that little hole to behave or else I'll have to find a bigger button!) Did I mention it was vintage? ;)

The sweet tan cowgirl boots you see here were not meant for the life of an Ohio-girl-turned-Eskimo! I slipped quite a few times while I tried to make a few pretty spins! They have no grip whatsoever. Oh my it was funny! Charlotte must have enjoyed the comedy act behind her lens! But there really is nothing so wonderful as a darling pair of real leather, brass-toed cowgirl boots, even if they are meant for the smooth hard wood of a dance floor. ;)

P.S. Just a word of thanks to you all for your earnest prayers for our dear hospitalized friend. I couldn't have been more pleased, grateful, and truly uplifted as I was for all of the comments we received from each of your caring hearts. Our friend is still in the same condition, and still needs our prayers. So if you all wouldn't mind putting her on your list of longterm prayers, that would just make our day, and hers! I cannot imagine what it must be like to suffer as she is suffering right now! Only Jesus can, and to Jesus we must look in these hard matters. Therefore let us go forth with boldness, knowing that He will hear our cries for mercy and healing for our sister in Christ. To Him alone be the Glory!
Soli Deo Gloria!

The dress is very cute! I think it would have looked better with a black cami underneath, though. :) Love the boots and great pics!

  3. This dress is stunning, Jessica! The blues and oranges of your outfit are so striking. I have never heard of Gunne Sax, so I don't think I can properly appreciate the dress's history--but I would like to do some reading on my own, now that you've introduced us to it.

Do you mind if I ask: would you consider doing a tutorial for us on how you did your hair? I would love to try that with my own hair! :)

    1. Wow! I am so glad you're taking the time to look up the historical facts behind Jessica McClintock's famous 70's Gunne Sax! Its always such a joy to hear of girls digging into history, even if it is over fashion.

Yes! I will put the hair tutorial on my list of things to do for sure! Its rather funny because I had a slight suspicion that my hair would get a lot of attention from you darlings! I will put it up toot-sweet, or as soon as I can!

      Stay tuned!

    1. And the award for: Name that Hair Style, goes tooooo... Kellie Falconer!

Not many girls know what to call the loopy locks in my hairdos, but you certainly do, Kellie! I can't rightly remember, but haven't you posted up pictures on one of your outfit posts of a pin curl hair style before?

      Happily,

      Jessica

    1. Thank you, Heidi, for posting up such a nice comment! You know, in all my vintage garment searches, I have yet to find a Gunne Sax dress too. But I just looked them up on the internet the other day, and it seems as if all the lovely dresses have been put up on either Etsy, or eBay. You might have some good providence there!

      Blessings,

      Jessica

  7. What a lovely dress! I like how the blue and orange of the outfit contrast and brighten each other. :)
I have definitely heard of Gunne Sax! I don't have one, but I have a dress from the same era that I use as a medieval costume. :)

Oh. My. Word. It's stunning! I love it!
I am well familiar with Gunne Sax, albeit unfortunately the actual name-brand dresses don't fit me. I did find a home-made dress on Etsy in my size with a similar aesthetic, and so that is my special "Gunne Sax" dress:)
I'm sorry to hear that your friend is still sick. I will keep her in my prayers.

I love the orange with the blue!
I have heard of Gunne Sax dresses before! There are so many wonderful ones for sale on Esty- always have wanted to just choose one and wait at the door to receive it! :)

I will continue to pray for your dear friend!
