Our family took a trip for a giant Christmas gift. We went EAST! Thinking DC would be a big hassle to work in right at Christmas and New Years we chose some places a little bit more interesting. It took us about 8 hours to get to the DC area. We visited Mount Vernon on Tuesday. The most memorable part of the day personally for me was the lunch we had at the Inn. Yummy, I'm still looking for the recipe for the peanut and chestnut soup most of us had that day. Sorry no pictures of that, but here are a few others.

I have the recipe from when we were there this fall. Here it is:
ReplyDeleteMt. Vernon Colonial Peanut & Chestnut Soup (serves 12)
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 c margarine or butter
1 T all-purpose flour
2 quarts chicken broth
1 c smooth peanut butter
1/2 c unsalted peanuts chopped
1 T Worcestershire sauce
1/2 c slice water chestnuts, chopped
Saute onion in butter. Stir in flour to make a roux. Once the roux is ready, add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and strain out onion. Add peanut butter and Worcestershire sauce and stir. Hold on stove at low heat until ready to serve. Garnish with chopped peanuts and waterchestnuts.
This is from the little book they sold at the giftshope there. When I made it, it was pretty close, but I don't think anything can beat the experience of being there.
So glad you were able to make the trip and lots of memories.
Love, Julie
