Classy on Sunday // 70's Picnic Dress

IMG_1955

Hello everyone,
Around here, the weather on Sunday(s) seems to be a repetitive problem for all of us girls. Namely, trying to decide what would be good to wear on a warm, muggy, and sweaty day for Church. Thankfully over the past few years I have acquired a few light "Sunday Best" garments for the sweaty Sundays, and one of them happens to be this lovely blue frock I call, The Picnic Dress.

This frock dates back to the seventies, and is is one of my all-time favorite antique finds! With its beautiful full length, a-line skirt completed by the lace trim; the frock poses to be the most fun dress to walk in. Sometimes it feels as if I could be living back in time, parading through the edwardian era with a parasol in hand! Or, (as the name implies) I would wear it on a very lady-like outing to a park and have a picnic with my sisters. Hehe, this should be called my day-dream dress. ;)

The most wonderful thing I have found through investing in a few vintage or antique garments, is that most of the time, I find ones that have been handmade. In fact, this dress was handmade! I only wish I knew the young girl who used to where it! If I did, I would want to know how she decided she wanted that particular dress, and where she she wore it. There are so many stories that could be told through old clothes. If only they could speak to us and tell us their journey and about the people they were owned by!

What do you like about this dress? Do you have any of you have any lovely old frocks handed down to you from your mothers, or grandmas? Have you ever stopped to think about who wore them before you did, and all the fun they must have had? After all, life is not an empty dream, and clothes have there part to play too.

Hope you all had a lovely Lord's Day!

Love,

Jessica

P.S- these pictures were taken in our Church's old cathedral building, for those of you curious ;)

Jessica, how did you get so brave so as to wear that to church? I would love to wear something like this, but would get ruthlessly teased. Yes, it'd be quite contrasted when compared to the mid-thigh length, gaping back, plunging neckline dresses I see on girls today. So what would your advice to me be? I am 16.

    1. Anonymous,

I would have to say that to wear any kind of garment that goes against the flow of other girls' immodest fashion IS very hard to do! And I completely understand your predicament - my sisters and I face this challenge just as much as you do!

But to answer your question, let me ask you something that my Mom and Dad are always reminding us girls, "Who are you dressing for?".

That question can sometimes pierce quite fiercely into our consciences, however this is a needful question, one which constantly keeps ourselves from dressing to impress. We believe that we are to dress modestly and beautifully because God calls us as women to adorn ourselves with garments that bring out the beauty He gave each one of us. We also believe that dressing modestly is apart of loving your neighbor. Sometimes women can dress to flaunt their bodies - we can't be like those women! Sometimes women can dress themselves frumpily - we can't be like those women either! We must dress to love our neighbors, and we must dress to bring our LORD glory.

The girls and I are able to brave the crowds by sticking close with each other. We give each other moral support when others girls are looking at us with question marks in their eyes. Perhaps you are the only girl in your household. Perhaps you have other sisters. If you are the former, then I would ask your parents to help you through the times of cold shoulders. If you are the later, round up your sister(s) and have a fashion powwow to discuss your troubles, and create solutions.

I know full well, as I said above, how out of place you can feel when you dress in a style that is much different from others! But hey! You are not dressing for THEM, you are dressing for HIM. He will support you, and reward you for following what He has taught you through His word. If you are going to make anyone smile, make Him smile first!

If you have any more questions, please feel free to send them our way! We enjoy helping out young ladies who are in predicaments like yours! :)
