Outfit // Retro Vibe

Retro Vibe
Hello! I have a smashing outfit to share with you all today; which reminds me of a retro mama who is dressed for going picnicking in park with her little brood. I don't normally pick an outfit that says retro all the way through, as I like a little more ease and comfort in my clothing–you know, the kind that I wear, not the kind that wears me–but this one worked really well. Just enough comfort, and most importantly, style.

I have never actually worn a scarf tied under my chin before, but it really did the trick in keeping the flying locks out of my face during the shoot! It was a windy one! Originally I had it secured loosely around my shoulders, but as soon as we walked out the door, I decided to make like the "fashionable grannies", and tie it up. I now understand why they styled their scarves like this during the vintage era– it was a smart way to keep your hair tidy! I have always admired this look but never had the opportunity to try it on myself. Its a keeper! You should try it too!

How do you fancy my shades? I must say, I do love a great pair of well fitting sunglasses! I had a perfectly wonderful pair I bought two years ago, but lost them over the side of a pontoon boat while on vacation in Destin, Florida. Don't worry, it happened the last day there, so my eyeballs were not fried by the blinding white-hot beaches. Still, it was a misfortune on my part, as it was just the beginning of the sunny season up North, and I had no shades to show for it. I went all summer long trying on one pair, and borrowing my Mom's and sisters in-between times. It was not good. Sunglasses really make all the difference, let me tell you!

Eventually, the next Summer presented herself in full radiance, and I still needed a good pair. At least I knew what I was looking for by that time: something subtle, with a little edge to them, and they couldn't touch my cheeks (Don't ever get large sunglasses that touch your cheeks as they will leave little "indian paint" marks across your face!). I found the perfect pair at Marshalls. No going back... until I lose this pair that is... No! I refuse to be so careless! ;)

I now dedicate this part of the post to my amazing, wonderful, role model: my beautiful Grandma Charlotte. The woman who lived through countless hardships all through her years, but never once forsook the Lord she loved as her Father, Friend, and Sustainer. Truly, when I hear my Dad's Mother's voice over the phone, I listen to a voice who has given so much away for the greater good of others. I listen to a voice who has prolonged her love (given by our Savior) for all those who are broken, weak and lost. She is a figure one never forgets. She is a figure who makes you forget yourself, and opens your eyes to the glories of the God of mercies. She is God's gift to many. I love her, with all my heart!

Grandma also gives us three many precious gifts to remind us that we were made lovely, and we need to dress in a way that brings the Lord glory. This past Christmas, dear Gran sent us all a box of treasures, one of them being this retro, convertible clutch/purse. She knows our tastes well! I couldn't have been more touched with her thoughtfulness when I pulled this dark beauty out from the layers of tissue. I keep it carefully hung up in my closet, and gingerly strap it over my shoulder when I take it out with me. Thanks Gran, for such a stylish accessory! I love and miss you dearly!

Charlotte excels day by day in her photography, does she not? I don't know how this blog could even be if it were not for her consistency, and relentless passion to make something look incredible! (In my most britified accent) "Brilliant job, my dear!" *giggle*

Have you ever lost a favorite pair of sunglasses?

  2. Love this outfit, so cute!!! My grandmother, though we sadly aren't as close as I'd like to be because of distance and etc, is one of my vintage inspirations. She still has such a classy style and I love it! (And I'm very happy to say that I inherited a lot of her physical traits, so she constantly gives me tips, haha!)

Out of curiosity, what kind of camera do you all use? I'm currently looking for one so I can actually start posting better photos on the blog. I have a Rebel xT but it's old and the timer constantly blurs and won't focus. Maybe I need a new lens...

    1. Hi Kalin! Thanks for commenting :)

      We use a Canon Rebel T3 with a 50mm 1.8/f lens.

      Hope this helps!

    2. We are in the same boat Kalin. Our Gran lives all the way across the country in the West, so it has been some time since I have seen her lovely face. I am so glad that you gather fashion inspiration from your Grandmother. In a way, we are always gathering little bits of our grandparents habits and characteristics, whether we know it or not, and that is part of what being a family is all about! It's pretty special. :)

      Glad to hear from you!

    3. Thank you, Charlotte! That helps a lot! :)

I definitely wish we could be closer, but she may end up moving here so that would really be wonderful! I can definitely see myself mirroring my grandparents on my mother's side, even though I didn't see my grandfather often and I'm not super close to my grandmother. It's so funny how that happens!

      Blessings! ♥

  4. hi Jessica! lovely outfit. you have captured a chic yet simple glamour thats also suitable for every day. being a Kansas girl, i totally understand that wind. especially during spring, its always always blowing here, and quite hard. i love the headscarf you wore. i have plenty, so i will love to try this someday soon.
glad you found a good fitting pair of sunglasses. ha. don't even ask me about loosing sunglasses. only with me, i usually break them unintentionally. i have had so many pairs its not even funny. luckily i pick them up for a dollar at a dollar store. can't beat that!
Charlotte just keeps getting better and better with her photography. it truly is top notch!

  5. Cute outfit! I am not really a retro person myself, but am really liking the look of your white shirt with the blue and white scarf. I don't think I have ever lost my sunglasses... They are usually broken by other people. I tend to have "blingy" sunglasses so they are always a favorite for younger siblings and guys and gals outside of our family to model.

    1. LOL! That is too funny about your troop of sunglass models! I can just see your younger brothers getting their hands on them for five seconds while posing with great exaggeration! Ha ha!

      Thanks for stopping by Maria!

  8. Oh, I love your outfit Jessica! Such a classic, feminine look really shows off your natural beauty!
I often wear headscarves like yours since my grandma always told my sister and me to wear one to prevent headaches, but of course keeping your hair in place on a windy day is an added plus!
I've never lost a pair of beloved sunglasses myself, but my sister lost her favorite pair in the Library of Congress. Thankfully we had another pair for her to use, but she was rather upset about losing them! :)
Wonderful post and very sweet writings about your grandma!

  9. Hi Jessica! This is a great outfit for this time of spring!
Yes, we are truly blessed to have loving, Godly Grandparents that show us right from wrong, stick out to the end, and show their love in every way.

I have never lost any sunglasses, since I usually choose not to wear them, but I did loose a bracelet over the edge of a pontoon once! At least it was nothing special even though it was someone else's. ;)

  13. Looking lovely, Jessica! It's so awesome how Charlotte is your sunglasses in the last photo.
I've never lost a pair of sunglasses, for alas, wearing glasses means that I can't wear shades (except for these odd things that fit over ones' glasses that I don't really like).
How wonderful to have such a godly grandmother - she also has great taste in clutches! ;)
